In the morning I joined a Windstar shore excursion visiting the North and South of Menorca and Mahon itself. We drove across the island, stopping to admire the scenic countryside and dramatic coastline that make Menorca so special. Along the way we visited both northern and southern areas, learning about local life, history and culture. It is a brilliant way to experience Menorca beyond the port. Back on board Wind Star, I enjoyed a delicious fish of the day lunch at The Veranda with views over the harbour, before heading ashore again to explore Mahon. The town is built on a hill, so it is a great way to burn off a few cruise calories. If you would rather skip the climb, there is a free public elevator from the port to the old town level and a road train that runs through the main sights, making it easy to explore. I wandered through the narrow streets, enjoying the viewpoints and taking in the atmosphere of this charming Mediterranean capital. Later, it is time for the sailaway from Mahon, a truly unforgettable sight. The harbour stretches almost six kilometres and up to thirty metres deep. It is said to be the second deepest natural harbour in the world after Sydney. Sailing through it aboard Wind Star is breathtaking, with cliffs, fortifications and pastel buildings lining the waterfront as the yacht heads out to sea. To finish the day, I enjoyed dinner at Candles, Wind Star’s intimate Steak House dining venue. The evening is filled with perfectly cooked dishes and a relaxed atmosphere, the perfect end to another wonderful day in the Mediterranean.
