Cunard has just announced that they will be extending their cruise pause – impacting voyages aboard Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth in the first half of 2021. It has been a rough year for cruising all around and certainly not the year that Cunard had planned for its 180th celebration. The extended pause will impact Queen Mary 2’s 2021 voyages through to 28 May, as well as Queen Elizabeth’s sailings through to June 4. Cunard say that Queen Victoria’s cruise itinerary, set to commence on 17 May, remains unaffected. The Cunard fleet have been laid up off the coast of the UK for many months now. Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth ended their cruise voyages in Australia during March 2020, as the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world, while Queen Victoria was sailing on a South American cruise. QM2 and Queen Victoria had returned to the UK by April. Queen Elizabeth remained far from home, in layup off the coast of the Philippines until July 2020 – when the ship sailed to the UK via the Suez Canal, joining her fleet mates in warm layup. Each of the Queens remain powered up – operating on their own engines – with a Captain, officers and essential crew aboard. Periodically, they can be seen visiting Southampton for crew changes and to take on provisions. In a statement shared on 9 December 2020, the line noted the decision was due to: “the ongoing travel constraints in place across the world”, while Cunard President Simon Palethorpe mentioned the ‘significant lead times to return to service’ as a factor in the pause extension. This is a significant logistical issue that all cruise lines will need to tackle once cruising resumes at scale; and will include preparing each ship for resuming cruising after lengthy layup periods, as well as returning thousands of crew to the vessels before any passengers can step foot aboard the ship.
