Their first two ships were Emerald Sky and Star with Sky being launched in the April of 2014 by model, actor and singer Twiggy who also serves as the ships godmother. The Emerald Sun and Dawn were launched the following year and all of the ships were built to the same design specification. During 2017 though Emerald will be launching 3 new ships the Radiance, the Liberte and the Destiny. The line have been picking up awards every year since their creation including ‘Best Value for Money’ from Cruise Critic two years in a row and also highly commended by Cruise International two years in a row for Best River Cruise Line. Plus after just two full seasons Emerald Waterways has been named the second highest ranked river cruise line by the Berlitz Guide! The just-released 2016/2017 Berlitz River Cruising In Europe Guide puts it above more established river cruise lines such as Viking, Avalon and Uniworld which is a fantastic achievement! Well that was fairly painless, normally the history bit drags out for ages. The Fleet So next up let’s have a look at the fleet. As we’ve mentioned Emerald Waterways are quite new still so their fleet is still relatively small compared to some of the other lines. Although what they lack in numbers they make up for with brand new ships and some stylish modern elegant touches. By the end of 2017 Emeralds European fleet will be up to 7 ships with the Mekong Navigator being their only ship in Asia. We’re going to talk about the European ships first though. Emerald Waterways has positioned itself somewhere between the three- and four-star markets. The line aims to compete with established four-star brands like Viking Cruises and Avalon Waterways by boasting a handful of innovative design touches and less expensive fares that still include a lot within the price of the cruise. Included in the cost are drinks (soft and alcoholic) at lunch and dinner, shore excursions in every port (including one gentle walkers tour), transfers and tips. Emerald's main marketing push is with English-speaking clients, with about half hailing from Australia. You’ll find Emerald’s ships on the Danube, the Rhine, the Main, the Rhone and the Douro.
