Explore Monte Carlo & Monaco - a tiny independent city-state on France’s Mediterranean coastline known for its upscale casinos, yacht-lined harbor and prestigious Grand Prix motor race, which runs through Monaco’s streets once a year. Monte-Carlo, its major district, is home to an elegant belle-époque casino complex and ornate Salle Garnier opera house. It also has many luxury hotels, boutiques, nightclubs and restaurants. In 1856 Prince Charles III of Monaco granted a charter allowing a joint stock company to build a casino. The casino opened in 1861, and five years later the district around it was declared by the prince to be Monte-Carlo. To revitalize the principality’s economy, Monte-Carlo was transformed into a luxuriously beautiful playground for the world’s rich. This city deserves at least a 3 day visit. The older part of the city is so intriguing with the Palace, tiny shops shops, great bistro dining and magnificent views. The Grand Prix takes place yearly and is slated for May 24th. This city is rich in culture with ballet, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, the iconic Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, as well as the Casinos, shopping, and nightlife. We simply enjoyed the hop on hop off bus, got off where we wanted and explored. Crystal Serenity docked close so we walked off the ship and onto the bus. Will I go again - you bet!
