Our day begins with a scenic tender ride into Nafplio’s picturesque harbor. While some see the tender as a formality, we see it as part of the experience—offering stunning views of the ship and the shoreline as we approach this magical city by sea. We’re greeted by Bourtzi Castle, a 15th-century Venetian fortress rising from the water, a dramatic introduction to a town steeped in beauty and history. 🚶‍♀️ In Nafplio’s Old Town, we stroll cobblestone streets lined with elegant Venetian homes and neoclassical mansions, stopping at: ⛪️ Agios Spyridon Church – This beautiful single-domed basilica dates back to 1702 and is known not only for its Byzantine murals but also as the site where Ioannis Kapodistrias, Greece’s first head of state, was tragically assassinated. You’ll see the preserved bullet mark framed inside. ☕️ Syntagma Square & Kentrikon Café – Under the shade of Nafplio’s famous plane tree, we enjoy Greek coffee, loukoumades (Greek doughnuts with honey), and a mind-blowing portokalopita—a traditional orange pie drenched in cinnamon-vanilla syrup. Kentrikon is one of Nafplio’s oldest cafés, offering the perfect spot to soak in the square’s lively local life. 🍨 Koustenis Ice Cream – Established in 1939, this family-run shop is a must-stop for handmade ice cream in flavors like mastiha, fig, and rosewater. 🧀 Anapliotiko Mpakalico – A highlight of our tour! This adorable specialty grocery store is decorated with salvaged cheese-making tools, like old cheese molds turned into light fixtures. We sample rare Greek cheeses from local islands, ending with homemade Greek yogurt topped with traditional spoon sweets—a true taste of Greek hospitality. 🍷 Karon’s Wine Shop – A cozy gem run by a fifth-generation winemaker, where we taste Greek wines, ouzo, and tsipouro, and learn the rich stories behind each bottle. 🎄 As our day winds down, we hunt for a special Christmas ornament—a tradition of ours. After visiting several shops, we find the perfect one: a hand-painted pomegranate, the symbol of Nafplio, personalized just for us.
