She was an engineering triumph, the combination of lessons learned the hard way and technologies developed in the darkest periods of modern human history. She was designed by a kind of mad genius but became a chic, speedy greyhound carrying the influential and the humble alike across the world’s most temperamental ocean. But then came the sudden decline - the death of the ocean liner. Almost overnight machines like United States were rendered obsolete and now - decades later, they are a very rare breed.
