Visitors to Kotor in Montenegro are spoiled for choice for great activities and adventures. Yet one of the most popular amongst visitors is to make the 260m climb up the old medieval road to the rear of the walled town up to the Fortress of St John, also known as the Fortress of St Ivan or just β€œKotor Fortress”. This medieval fortress was an essential part of the fortifications for the town with the town walls meandering up the cliff face of the mountain. You can in effect climb and follow these walls all the way up to the fortress 260m above the town below. It’s quite a feat of engineering. The entrance fee is €8 pp but the opening times of the toll booth appear limited. It was closed when we climbed. Be warned this is some climb! Steep and you negotiate these slopes over rough ground and rubble in places. There are also reputably 1350 steps also. But this climb rewards you with absolutely stunning views across the town and down the fjord. It’s mesmerising and just wonderful. The climb takes over an hour to get up there. So take drink and refreshments. In the summer a local trader will sell you bottles of water and cans of beer too. Coming back down is easier thanks to gravity. And you can reward your efforts with sumptuous food and drink in the gorgeous town of Kotor afterwards. If you are fit enough and have sensible footwear then this is a brilliant low cost activity when in Kotor. Highly rewarding. #marellacruises #cruisevlog #marella #kotor #montenegro #hiking #adriatic Please subscribe to see more content like this - https://youtube.com/@CooksExplore?sub_confirmation=1
