It appears that these new protocols caught the cruise lines off guard based on announcements made by NCLH. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings' CEO went on record to indicate that these requirements were absurd given the brand's "ironclad" Sail SAFE plan, which includes 100% vaccinated cruises. As part of this CDC cruise update, the agency detailed its requirements in several categories. Among the sections covered include preventive measures, face mask usage, social distancing, and more. ------CDC GUIDELINES DO NOT INCLUDE VACCINES------ Among the CDC cruise ship updates was the recommendation to include vaccines as part of the cruise lines' restart plans. Yes, the CDC did NOT outright mandate vaccinations to cruise. However, if the cruise lines want to skip the test cruise portion of the Conditional Sailing Order, then 98% of crew and 95% of passengers will need to be vaccinated against COVID-19. ------FACE MASK REQUIREMENTS------ The government agency does require cruisers to wear face masks throughout the cruise at all times. Facial coverings need to be worn while indoors and even while outdoors on the pool deck. In addition, this major cruise update also revealed that the CDC will not allow "extended" face mask removal during meals and beverage service. This could mean that individuals would need to take face masks on and off during meals or between sips of drinks at a bar. ------CDC CRUISE SHIP SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIREMENTS ------ As you would expect, the CDC Cruise update has a number of requirements for increasing physical distancing on cruise ships. For the most part, these are common sense restrictions. They include maintaining 6 feet of separation in public venues, bars, restaurants, and theaters. Social distancing must also occur on outdoor decks, and in venues like gyms, spas, and casinos. Physical distancing measures must also include using markers and signage in stairwells and near elevators. This is unfortunate CDC cruise news! ------DINING REQUIREMENTS ------ The CDC requires several changes to restaurants and other entertainment facilities as well. Along with changes to room layouts and capacity limits, cruise ships must eliminate ALL self-service dining and beverage stations. So, say goodbye to the traditional buffet. Cruise lines should also provide alternative dining options. These include al fresco dining and more in-room dining possibilities. Could this mean free room service for everyone? Other CDC recommendations include increased use of technology for more contactless options and to reduce crowds. ------SHORE EXCURSION REQUIREMENTS ----- The CDC is prohibiting independent exploration in ports of call. This means cruisers will not be allowed to freely roam their destinations. Instead, cruise passengers will need to go ashore on cruise line vetted shore excursions.
