Creator's Key Takeaways

Welcome to the world famous Jungle Cruise. My name is Nichols and I'll be your skins guide, social director, and definitely not your hippotabrer for the next three months.

It's the beautiful, the gorgeous, the eighth wonder of the world, the backside of water.

If you enjoyed your cruise, we recommend renting a canoe from the Won Bon bike.

Guests board a canopied tramp steamer and set off on a scenic and comedic river expedition through jungle environments filled with Audio-Animatronic animals, waterfalls, ancient ruins, and plenty of famous skipper jokes. The attraction is known for its live skipper narration, playful humor, tropical scenery, and long-running status as one of Disney’s most recognizable opening-day style attractions. History of Jungle Cruise: The original Jungle Cruise opened at Disneyland Park in California on July 17, 1955, the same day Disneyland first welcomed guests. Early versions of the attraction were inspired by Disney’s True-Life Adventure films and had a more serious, educational tone. Over time, Walt Disney and Imagineering shifted the attraction toward more humor, adventure, and theatrical storytelling. In the early 1960s, Disney Legend Marc Davis helped shape the attraction’s comedic personality by creating humorous scenes and sight gags. Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise expanded over the years with additions such as the Indian elephant bathing pool in 1962, the trapped safari and African veldt region in 1964, and additional scenes and figures in 1976. In 1994, Disneyland also added a new two-story queue building and adjusted the ride channel as Adventureland prepared for Indiana Jones Adventure. Jungle Cruise later became part of Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, opening with the park on October 1, 1971. The Magic Kingdom version brought the Jungle Cruise experience to Florida’s Adventureland, where it remains one of the park’s most famous classic Disney attractions. The attraction also expanded internationally. Tokyo Disneyland opened its version of Jungle Cruise on April 15, 1983. In 2014, Tokyo Disneyland updated the attraction into Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions, adding new lighting, special effects, music, and a refreshed expedition-style experience. Hong Kong Disneyland opened its version, Jungle River Cruise, on September 12, 2005, offering a similar river adventure with its own setting and presentation. Disneyland Paris and Shanghai Disneyland do not have a Jungle Cruise attraction, making the ride a unique part of select Disney castle parks around the world. In 2013, Jungle Cruise at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom received a temporary holiday overlay called Jingle Cruise, adding seasonal decorations, renamed boats, and holiday-themed skipper jokes. In 2021, Disney introduced major story enhancements to Jungle Cruise at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom. These updates added new scenes, more wildlife, expanded backstory, and a refreshed storyline centered more around the Jungle Navigation Company and the skippers while keeping the classic humor and spirit of the attraction. Today, Jungle Cruise remains one of Disney’s most beloved Adventureland attractions, combining classic Disney storytelling, live performance, animatronics, corny jokes, and nostalgic theme park atmosphere into a ride that continues to entertain new generations of Disney Parks guests.
