Philadelphia USA, famous for the Liberty Bell, Philly Cheesesteaks and the Rocky Steps. But why is this old street in the seaside resort of Porthcawl, South Wales named after the American city? In a new series, we look at Welsh place names and people who have connections with the USA starting in our home town of Porthcawl on the Welsh coast. Many Irish, Scottish English and Welsh settled in America hence the familiar names, especially on the East Coast. But the name Philadelphia Road didn’t travel out to America but instead was named after a famous city, Pennsylvania’s largest city. It was brought back to Wales. The street started as Philadelphia Row back in the early 1800s before being changed to Philadelphia Road.
