Take a look at the industrial port of Anchorage and its surroundings. Our cruise ship, the Holland America MS Amsterdam, visited the Port of Anchorage as part of her 14 day Alaska cruise in June of 2017. We were especially impressed by the 30+ feet in tide difference from the time we left the ship in the morning (high tide) vs when we came back in the early evening (low tide). The gangway was on deck 2 but when we returned it was at deck 5. From what we were told, the tide differences is what makes it difficult for most cruise ships to dock in Anchorage, instead choosing Whittier or Seward instead. The ship must arrive and leave during high tide. When our cruise ship left the Port of Anchorage, it was around 10 PM, when the tide was high enough. At the Port of Anchorage, we also noticed numerous US Air Force jets flying overhead. These were pretty advanced modern looking ones, probably the F-22A Raptor. There is a free shuttle provided to take passengers from port to downtown Anchorage. You can see our video of what that was like here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4lOI_d6T9Q #anchorage
