Spain is cracking down on unruly tourist behavior with some of the toughest regulations in Europe, according to a recent report by Forbes. Smoking is now banned on many popular beaches—including those in the Costa del Sol, Barcelona, and the Balearic Islands—with violators facing fines of up to $2,344. Even vaping isn’t safe from scrutiny. In some parts of Spain, using e-cigarettes indoors can carry the same penalties as smoking. Cork Beo notes that vape aerosol can trigger hotel smoke detectors, leading to fines, cleaning charges, or even the cancellation of your booking. Other seemingly minor offenses can also hit your wallet. Public urination—including relieving yourself in the sea—can result in fines of up to around $879 in coastal towns like Marbella and Vigo. Hogging a sunbed by leaving a towel on it unattended for hours? That could cost you $293 in places like the Canary Islands. Even your wardrobe could get you into trouble. Strolling city streets in just swimwear in destinations such as Malaga or Barcelona may lead to fines. And while driving in flip-flops isn’t explicitly illegal, police can fine you up to $234 if they consider your footwear unsafe. Nightlife destinations like Ibiza and Mallorca are also enforcing stricter rules.
