Could things get any worse on our Norwegian Cruise Line Pride of America 7 day Hawaiian island cruise? Last time we had the worst dining experience ever on a cruise. Today is a port day in Mauai, so we rent a Turo and go to Haleakalā National Park summit district to see the view and hike a little bit of the sliding sands trail. On the way back we stop for lunch at the Kula Marketplace before deciding to drive up to Lāhainā where things get much, much worse. Two weeks after we visited Lāhainā, the wildfires of Hawaii in 2023 tore through Mauai, and completely destroyed Lāhainā, killing over 100 people and displacing over 3,000 others. We are grateful that we were able to see this beautiful little town before the devastation, see the historic banyan tree, patronize a few of the small businesses, and visit the historic Baldwin Home Museum just before the fires. Back aboard the ship we take in the Aloha Polynesia show at the Hollywood Theater and then do some shopping before finishing off the night with a glass of wine at the Napa Wine Bar.
