YouTube Video Description

(Alesund) Norway (pronounced Olesund). Without a doubt one of the most beautiful cityscapes in the world, when you arrive in Alesund you understand why it is the most popular destination for cruise ship passengers in Norway. The panoramic views from Mt Aksla are breathtaking with a restaurant and cafe on top. (We were too early, opens at 10.00am, closed when we arrived) If you are driving by car, you can access Mt Aksla by heading up to Fjellstua viewpoint. There is an airport on the Archipelago that has flights in from Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim. Plenty of accommodation, but you will need to book in advance. For the budget conscious there is option of Hostels or camping ground outside city area. Alesund has 4 different cruises that operate out of here. Geirangerfjord (easier to do from Hellesylt). Trandalfjord, Hjorundfjord and Archipelago cruises. There is a local bus service to get around, there is also a city train tour that is worth doing, it goes up to Mt Aksla and takes you also around the city center. It has narrated headsets in different languages and free Wi Fi onboard. City was burnt down in 1904 and Kaiser Wilhelm 2 loved this city so much that he bought in Architects from Europe with designs and helped with funding to rebuild. Hence the beautiful art Nouveau style city that looks like it is in central Europe. Alesund is very compact, easy to walk around. This is best way to appreciate the wonderful Art Nouveau architecture and designs. It has wonderful shopping and cafes. Take a walk-up Mt Aksla to Fjellstua Viewpoint, 418 steps. There is plenty of rest stop locations on way up steps, so you can take your time. You can access the amazing Trollstigen Road (CLOSED, reopens 14 July 2025) from Alesund by tour or if you are staying and driving, it would be simply amazing to do. Alesund is a destination you must go if you are in Norway and you have time, put it on your to do list.
