I love a good hike and when I saw that P&O Cruises offered a 'Climb the Pitons shore excursion hike on the Caribbean island of St Lucia, I didn't hesitate. The Pitons are iconic twin peaks which are synonymous with this island and I thought it would be a great challenge and would burn off some of the calories I'd consumed on the ship! This video shows exactly what this hike is like from start to finish. It is EXTREME - be aware. I wasn't. I am physically fit and do a lot of hiking, but this was a challenge even for me. It was such an extreme challenge that I was surprised that P&O Cruises even offered it as an excursion, but it's great that they did and there were plenty of others joining me who had also booked up this hike and fancied a challenge. Be warned, the bus journey from the cruise port to the base of the Pitons takes 90 minutes each way and is very zig-zagging around hairpin bends. Also the terrain underfoot is very rocky. But the views are fabulous - especially the one at the end. Enjoy the video and do tell me in the comments if you this this is the world's most extreme hikes...or at least one of them! Doing it in the Caribbean sun/heat was also tough-going - I thought I was going to faint and pass out on the return. You MUST take lots of water. NB if your cruise ship doesn't offer this as an excursion then this can be booked independently too.
