Queen Victoria and her second son Prince Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh built the oldest working harbor in the southern hemisphere. With amazing views of Table Mountain, wild seals, commercial fishing boats, exploration ships, unique bridges, historical buildings, silo hotel and more… The Victoria Basin was used as the gateway to Southern Africa until the mid-1930's. Today it is used by smaller commercial vessels, fishing and pleasure boats, also by smaller passenger cruise ships. The Alfred Basin where the first docks were built and today is apart of the Port of Cape Town officially opened by and named after Prince Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh, in July 1870. After 10 years of construction work. The prince, Queen Vctoria's second son, laid the foundation stone in 1860. The basin is now part of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. The Waterfront Harbour Cruise starts on the pier, just outside the Two Oceans Aquarium. The tour was purchased through the hop on hop off bus company. After leaving the marina area, the first bridge we passed under was Bascule Bridge which the southern hemisphere’s largest synchro-lift and only drawbridge. Once we passed underneath we were in Alfred’s Basin and approached the Clock Tower Bridge. This is a swinging pedestrian bridge that connects the two sides of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. From here you can see the historic Clock Tower that it was built in 1882 as well as the Nelson Mandela Gateway where you can catch the ferry to Robben’s Island. This brings us Victoria’s Basin. As we moved along we were provided with a great vantage point of the fishing ships as we circle South Africa’s oldest working harbor. We even got to see some Cape Fur Seals sleeping in the big tires that are used as bummers. On the way back into the harbour we toured the opposite side V&A Waterfront. And of course, Table Mountain which is always present in the background. And at this time of the day she was presented to us with her tablecloth. This section of the V&A seemed to be bustling with people, shops, restaurants and all kinds of boats. And of course Michael tried his best to get people to wave at us as we passed by. Once we got back into the marina area and prepared to dock, we were once again greeted by the Cape Fur Seals. Most of which were chilling out, sleeping or just there to entertain us with their quirky movements.
