The End of the Ivan Franko Class - Review MARCO POLO is being scrapped. Set course for Alang. The 55 year old cruise liner MARCO POLO has now been sold for scrapping. After being auctioned off as a result of the CMV bankruptcy, MARCO POLO was initially transferred to the Persian Gulf. The talk had been of a conversion to a hotel or accommodation ship. However, skeptics had feared that the ship would in fact be scrapped. This is what will happen now. MARCO POLO has already set course for Alang in India. The last remaining ship of the Ivan Franko class is now lost. The Ivan Franko class was a series of five passenger ships that were built between 1963 and 1972 at the Mathias Thesen shipyard in Wismar for what was then the Soviet Union. The IVAN FRANKO (IMO 5415901) of the Black Sea Shipping Company was scrapped in Alang in 1997. The Black Sea Shipping Company's TARAS SHEVZHENKO (IMO 6508195) was also scrapped in Alang in 2005. The SHOTA RUSTAVELI (IMO 6707753) of the Black Sea Shipping Company, last sailing under the name ASSEDO (read Odessa backwards), went to Alang in 2003. The Baltic Shipping Company's MIKHAIL LERMONTOV (IMO 7042318) sank off New Zealand in 1986. The MARCO POLO ex ALEKSANDR PUSHKIN (IMO 6417097) will also end in Alang now.
