Today we explore the beautiful Italian city of Florence! Florence or Firenze in Italian is the capital of the Tuscany region. It has about 360,000 people living there. Florence was a centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the era. It is also considered by many to be the birthplace of the Renaissance. The historic City Center is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city also contains numerous museums and art galleries such as the Uffizi Gallery and Palazzo Pitti. We started our Florence Adventure by going to the Academia Gallery Museum. This museum is without a doubt the most famous museum in Florence. It gets this title due to one thing, The statue of David created by Michelangelo. This is a "must see" and will not disappoint! This museum also contains the works of Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pontormo, Sarto, and Allori. It's not a large museum but is packed with so many unique things to see. Another "must-see" in Florence is the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore or the Florence Duomo. This beautiful cathedral is located right in the middle of town and hard to miss. It's unique color and size are sure to impress. While seeing the Duomo, hop over and see the Baptistry of Saint John. Both of these sights are located in the Pizza San Giovanni. Walking through this historic city is also a treat! The streets and buildings all just wowed me! Another "must-see" is Ponte Vecchio. It has been a dream of mine to walk over this bridge for a long time! I really enjoyed our stroll and in the middle you can get some very nice pictures and views! The Uffizi Gallery was our next stop. These galleries occupy the first and second floors of the office building built by the Medici's. Their collection of Renaissance period pieces include some of the world's finest and most beloved. Every renowned master of the time is included in this gallery. We saw works of art by Beato, Angelico, Botticelli, Correggio, Leonardo, Raffaello, Michelangelo, and Caravaffio. It is truly one of the great museums of the world. Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world. Founded by the Dominican friars shortly after 1221, the year of their arrival in Florence. Thanks to the excellence of the formulae developed by the friars, their products became famous throughout the lands. A visit today will lead you to a small museum where original recipes and texts used by the friars can be seen. You can also enjoy smelling all of the fragrances and perfumes. This was a delightful stop for me. I came away with a perfume that was created in 1533 for Caterina de' Medici called Acqua della Regina or The Queen's Water. It was created just for her in honor of her wedding. I bought this perfume in honor of my birthday! Thank you so much for watching and if you read all of this, you're a rock star! Thank you!
