YouTube Video Description

Welcome back to Travel Cruise Feast! Today we’re exploring one of the most charming small capitals in the world — Wellington, New Zealand. With a population of just 215,000, this compact city sits at the southern tip of the North Island and is one of the easiest cruise ports to explore on foot. When your cruise ship docks at Wellington Harbour, you can walk straight into town. Despite its size, Wellington delivers big: dramatic hills, a sparkling waterfront, world-class coffee, and vibrant food and culture. Many cruisers head to Wētā Workshop in Miramar — the creative home behind The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, and more. It’s a fantastic, though pricey, excursion for film lovers. But in this episode of our New Zealand Cruise Port Guide, we focused on budget-friendly highlights. First stop: the historic Wellington Cable Car. It’s an easy walk from the port and a short scenic ride up to the Botanic Garden. With family tickets under 50 NZD, it’s a great value. You can even ride up and walk down through the gardens — about 40 minutes of beautiful views. Next, we explored the Wellington Waterfront, another easy stroll from the cruise terminal. On a sunny day, it’s one of the most beautiful and walkable spots in the city. A top attraction here is Te Papa Museum, New Zealand’s national museum — completely free and perfect for cruisers. You can dive into Māori culture, natural history, and the powerful Gallipoli exhibition. Sadly, it was closed on our visit! Of course, we couldn’t leave without sampling Wellington’s famous food scene — and we found a delicious Malaysian noodle stall right on the wharf. Wellington is compact, friendly, and ideal for a DIY cruise day. From scenic views to great coffee and easy sightseeing, it’s a must-visit stop on any New Zealand cruise itinerary. 👉 Subscribe and follow along as we head to our next port: Napier — New Zealand’s charming Art Deco city.
