Grandeur of the Seas: May 17th Sailing Departures and Arrivals
YouTube Video Descriptionβ
The Grandeur of the Seas departed Baltimore Maryland at 4PM on Friday May 17th, 2013 to start a 7 night Bermuda cruise. After departing it she made a quick turn around before heading toward the Chesapeake Bay. Roughly 40 minutes into the sailing she passed under the Francis Scott Key Bridge, about an hour and a half later she passed under the pair of suspension bridges that make up the William Preston Jr. Memorial Bridge. The departure from Baltimore takes over 10 hours in all, passing under 3 bridges I filmed near the start and ending when she passes over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel before finally entering the Atlantic Ocean. The arrival and departure from Bermuda while not 10 hours long like Baltimore, it is another one of the lengthiest voyages to reach a port at just over 2 hours of navigating (over 3 hours within viewing distance of Bermuda). Bermuda first became visible at roughly noon on the 19th. In order to enter the port the ship must first sail past Bermuda to reach the entrance to the channel on the other side. It then sails strait towards the land and picks up the pilot at about 1:20pm before taking a sharp turn to starboard. She then follows a very narrow channel back in the direction she came from, heading back out to see for a significant portion of it before turning back toward land and entering the Dockyard port at 3pm. At time while transiting the channel the area can narrow to just feet on either of the ship with exposed rocks and shallow reefs visible. This is incredibly noticeable during the departure as the waves can be seen crashing on this shallow land. Departure occurs very similar to the arrival just in reverse and starting at 5pm. Upon moving away from the pier the Grandeur of the Seas stopped for a few minutes as the forward tender lifeboats were swapped between the starboard and port sides. Upon arrival in Baltimore a tender was lowered on land most likely for repairs and the reason for the move. At roughly 9:20PM on the 23rd the Grandeur of the Seas reached the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to start her lengthy journey back up to Baltimore.
