YouTube Video Description

Thinking about flying out of Cartagena? In this video, we are giving you a full, detailed tour of our experience at the Cartagena airport! We are flying from Cartagena with a layover in Bogota and onwards to JFK, taking you along for every step of the journey. Watch as we head to the Avianca ticket counter to get our boarding passes, and then make our way over to the gates. Note: In the video, we kept saying "international gates," but gates 1–8 are actually the domestic gates! Because our ultimate destination was JFK, we had international travel on the mind, but our first leg to Bogota departed from Gate 1 in the domestic terminal. We’ll give you a full tour of the main level, which is a cozy, single area packed with a few shops and quick eateries like Subway. 💡 PRO TRAVEL TIP: The main level gets incredibly packed, and you’ll notice there are hardly any chairs available near the gates. Head straight to the upstairs area! There is an upstairs section with extra, hidden seating that most people miss—it's the perfect place to sit down, grab food, and relax before your flight. ✈️ About the Airport: Official Name, History & Fun Facts Official Name: Rafael Núñez International Airport Brief History: Originally opening as an airfield way back in 1920, it is one of the oldest operational aviation sites in Colombia. It was later renamed in 1986 to honor Rafael Núñez, a four-time president of Colombia who famously wrote the lyrics to the Colombian national anthem. Fun Facts: The very first flight out of this airport in 1920 was flown by a French pilot in a biplane appropriately named "Cartagena"! Iconic aviator Charles Lindbergh even landed the Spirit of St. Louis here in 1928. Unlike massive, confusing international hubs, CTG is incredibly compact and uniquely located right in the middle of the Crespo neighborhood just a 15-minute taxi ride from the historic Walled City.
