I booked a ship excursion called "Discover the Three Bays," which took us through local towns, markets, and off-road trails to some of the island’s scenic beaches. The trip started with a chaotic but manageable tendering process, followed by a convoy of SUVs through the city. Our first stop was a quick viewpoint of Sugarloaf Mountain, then on to a crowded and aggressive souvenir market. From there, we went deep into the countryside, bouncing down dirt trails to see a massive baobab tree, where legend says a hug and a wish can bring good luck. We continued to the three bays: Pigeon Bay (formerly home to a pigeon colony that has since disappeared), Kite Beach (popular for strong winds but not for swimming), and the final bay, where visitors could swim or explore small sea caves. I opted for the caves, which were worth checking out. Local vendors sold fresh coconuts, beer, and Bonbon Anglais—a bright red, fruity soda. The adventure had a few hiccups, including a vehicle breakdown and a questionable snack stop (I passed). But the drive back offered great views, an abandoned French military site, and one last look at Sugarloaf Mountain before returning to the port.
