Join us for Day 3 of our Canary Islands cruise aboard the beautiful Marella Explorer 2 as we explore the stunning city of Funchal on the island of Madeira. Our day began with a relaxed start before heading off on a guided excursion booked through Viator to the incredible hilltop village of Monte. Here we learned about the fascinating history of this mountain settlement and the traditions that make it so unique. One of the highlights was discovering the story behind the famous Monte toboggan sleds and the legendary carreiros – the skilled drivers who steer these wicker sleds through the steep streets below. This centuries-old tradition began as a practical way for locals to travel down the mountain, and today it remains one of Madeira’s most thrilling experiences. We also explored the beautiful churches and shrines dedicated to Our Lady of Monte, hearing the history, legends and even some tragic stories connected to these important religious sites. Of course, the real adrenaline rush came when we jumped aboard the famous Monte toboggan! Racing down the winding streets, dodging traffic and pedestrians, was an unforgettable ride and one of the most unique experiences we’ve had on our travels. After the excitement, we spent time relaxing in the charming city of Funchal – wandering through the shops and markets, enjoying delicious ice cream, and sampling some wonderful local Madeira wine. The laid-back atmosphere made it the perfect place to unwind before heading back to the ship. Back aboard the Marella Explorer 2, the day finished in style with another fantastic meal and a great evening of entertainment.
