On a daytime excursion to the Orkney Islands, I was able to see much of the highlights in an 8-hour period. I took a motor coach excursion that drove by the Scapa Flow Bay and stopped at Scara Brae, Skaill House, the Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After the bus tour, I took a free local shuttle that was available from the cruise port. With a short drive, it took me into the town of Kirkwall. I then visited the St. Magnus Cathedral, the Orkney Museum and the Tankerness House Gardens. For me, the highlights of the day were Scara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, and the St Magnus Cathedral. For senior and solo travelers, Orkney is a very friendly community.
