Day 2 of our Caribbean cruise on Holland America Line's Nieuw Amsterdam took us to Nassau, Bahamas. Since our itinerary was changed and this port call occurred on a different day, our scheduled excursion was cancelled. Rather than book a replacement, we set out on our own to explore the downtown area. We found shops and restaurants as well as a couple beach resorts within a mile of the cruise terminal. We happened upon Junkanoo Beach which offers free public access to the sand and clear Caribbean water. Spent time swimming and walking down the beach. Some shore excursions being offered on our cruise were for a day at the beach. Could have spent hundreds of dollars to do an organized beach day but spend nothing doing it on our own.
