On May 19th the Ovation of the Seas made her inaugural visit to Juneau Alaska. While spending the day in port I booked the "Dog Sledding on the Mendenhall Glacier by Helicopter" excursion directly through Royal Caribbean. We met the excursion right at the pier when getting off the ship. They then took our group to a bus that gave us a short informative drive through Juneau to the airport where we met the helicopters. Once there we were given safety information, provided snow boots, and allowed to lock up any bags and items we had with us. They assigned us to a helicopter and gave us specific seats based on weight distribution. We were then taken out to the tarmac where we watched our helicopter arrive and boarded. The flight to the Mendenhall Glacier then took about 10 minutes. Once we reached the dog camp we departed the helicopter and had a few minutes to look around before breaking into even smaller groups of just 4 people to pair up with a musher and dog sled. Each dog sled features two sleds and four locations for guests. The first sled features a seat with a view of the dogs, followed by the musher standing on the back of the sled. The second sled then has a second seat for a guest as well as a location for someone to stand and experience what it's like to drive a dog sled. On the route 3 stops were made allowing for interaction with the dogs as well as rotation through the different spots. After a loop around the camp we returned and got another chance to meet the dogs as well as a puppy that is working to become a part of a team. Eventually the helicopters returned to take us on another flight back down from the mountain and then a final bus ride back to the port.
