Queen Mary 2 Winter Crossing Day 7 brings one of the most classic Cunard experiences onboard QM2 — traditional afternoon tea in the Queen’s Room — while the rough North Atlantic seas are moving right outside the windows. We start the day looking out from our sheltered balcony during our 8-day Queen Mary 2 transatlantic crossing from New York to Southampton, and the ocean is definitely moving. The camera never fully does it justice, but the waves looked huge from our balcony, the wind was cold, and it was another reminder that this is not a Caribbean cruise — this is a true winter North Atlantic crossing aboard Cunard’s legendary ocean liner. After our usual room service breakfast in the cabin, we head to the Queen’s Room on Queen Mary 2 for traditional afternoon tea. This is one of those classic Cunard moments: tea, finger sandwiches, pastries, desserts, white-glove-style service, and live music in a beautiful room while QM2 continues across the Atlantic. Michael decided to try a little bit of everything — cucumber sandwiches, chicken and bacon, North Atlantic prawns, peanut butter dessert, strawberry shortcake, carrot cake, rich chocolate, and more. We also learned that the afternoon tea menu changes daily, which makes this one of those experiences you could enjoy more than once during a crossing. What makes this day so interesting is the contrast. Inside, everything feels elegant, calm, and proper. Outside, the North Atlantic is cold, rough, and powerful. That is exactly what makes Queen Mary 2 feel so different from a regular cruise ship. She is an ocean liner built for this route, and you really feel that when the waves are rolling past the windows. We also spend a little time around the ship where live music was playing and later stop by the Empire Casino onboard Queen Mary 2, where a quick slot machine bonus round gives us a fun little win to end the day.
