Prepare Your Workspace – Lay out all your supplies on a clean surface. Wipe the Vial – Use an alcohol swab to clean the top of the progesterone vial. Attach Drawing Needle – Attach the 18-gauge needle to the syringe. Draw Medication Pull back the syringe plunger to draw air equal to your prescribed dose. Insert the needle into the vial and push the air in to make drawing easier. Invert the vial and slowly draw the correct amount of progesterone. Check for air bubbles and tap the syringe gently to remove them. Switch Needles Remove the 18-gauge needle and replace it with the thinner 22-25 gauge needle for injection. Step 2: Prepare for Injection Choose the Injection Site The injection is given in the upper outer quadrant of the buttocks (gluteal muscle). Alternate sides daily to avoid irritation. Clean the Area – Use an alcohol swab to disinfect the injection site and let it dry. Hold the Syringe Properly – Hold it like a dart at a 90-degree angle. Step 3: Administer the Injection Insert the Needle – Quickly insert the needle into the muscle at a 90-degree angle. Aspirate (Check for Blood) – Pull back slightly on the plunger. If blood enters the syringe, remove the needle and try a different site. If no blood appears, proceed with the injection. Inject the Medication – Slowly push the plunger to inject the progesterone. Withdraw the Needle – Remove the needle quickly and apply gentle pressure with a gauze pad. Step 4: Aftercare Massage the Area – This helps the oil-based medication absorb and reduces lumps. Apply a Band-Aid if necessary. Dispose of the Needle – Place the used needle and syringe in a sharps container. Monitor for Reactions – Watch for redness, swelling, or pain and contact your doctor if needed. Tips for a Smoother Injection: Warm the progesterone vial slightly (roll it between your hands) to thin the oil. Inject slowly to reduce pain and lumps. Use a heating pad or gentle massage post-injection to prevent soreness.
