The construction of one of the most spectacular tunnels in the world is currently being planned in Norway: a 1.7 kilometer long tunnel for ships up to around 26 meters wide. The tunnel is intended to connect the Moldefjord near Eide with the Vanylvsfjord near Kjøde. This would allow ships to avoid the route around Stadlandet, also known as Vestkapp (West Cape). This route often experiences rough water and wind conditions in autumn and winter. The Stad ship tunnel will shorten this route, which means the dangerous passage around the Western Cape can be avoided for smaller ships. The tunnel should be 36 meters wide and the fairway should be 26.5 meters wide. A water depth of 12 meters and a headroom of 37 meters are planned. This means that the ships operated by Hurtigruten and Havila Kystruten could also use the tunnel. There should be a 4.75 meter wide supply route on both sides of the fairway. A passage through the tunnel could then be another highlight on a trip along the Norwegian coast. Our photo gallery shows what the tunnel sis going to look like.
