Today I am taking my first ferry ride on the Islay Ferry. The ferry and a small airport are the only way to reach Islay from the mainland. I didn't really know what to expect, but the ferry ride was rather fun, it was like a mini cruise. It had breakfast and a coffee bar and plenty of seating and lounges. Plus the weather was beautiful to sit on the open deck and watch the picturesque landscapes of Scotland. The point of going to Islay was to visit the nine distilleries that allowed visitors. Port Ellen is the only one that doesn't have a visitor center, if you are curious. Our first distillery was Caol Ila Distillery, which was four minutes from the port and the largest distillery on the Island. This distillery is part of the Johnnie Walker family of distilleries. We just stopped in for a dram before we made our way to our next tour. Our first tour on Islay is Kilchoman, which is a great distillery and great whisky. However, on the way there, we were victims of the roads and got the car stuck. Luckily, Islay has the nicest people I have ever met and a couple cars stopped to help. Eventually, our tour guide at Kilchoman called her husband to come give us a tow so Kilchoman will always have a special place in my heart for how they helped to random strangers. Then it was off to our hotel, the Bridgend Hotel. Thanks for watching!
