YouTube Video Description

We took America’s Steepest Cog Railway to the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, home to what’s known as “the world’s worst weather.” What started as a clear summer day quickly turned into freezing temperatures with 50–70 mph winds, giving us a firsthand taste of why this mountain is so legendary! ❄️🌪️ Standing at 6,288 feet, Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States and part of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. For decades, it held the world record for the fastest wind speed ever recorded on Earth — a staggering 231 miles per hour (372 km/h), measured on April 12, 1934 at the Mount Washington Observatory. The mountain is also known for its extreme wind chills, which can plunge below −100 °F (−73 °C) in winter, rivaling conditions found at the poles. But Mount Washington isn’t just famous for weather — it’s also known for its danger. The mountain’s rapidly changing conditions have claimed over 160 lives since the mid-1800s, making it one of the most perilous hiking destinations in the United States. Sudden storms, hypothermia, and poor visibility have all contributed to its deadly reputation, even in summer months. Hikers, climbers, and skiers are constantly reminded that Mount Washington demands respect. To reach the summit, we rode the historic Mount Washington Cog Railway, a true American engineering marvel. Built by Sylvester Marsh, the railway opened in 1869, making it the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world. For over 155 years, it has carried adventurers and sightseers up the steep 3-mile track with grades as high as 37 percent — the steepest in the U.S.! The Cog remains a symbol of innovation and determination, offering a thrilling, scenic, and unforgettable ride through the clouds. 🚆☁️ Join us on this unforgettable Mount Washington Cog Railway adventure as we experience extreme weather, incredible history, and breathtaking views atop one of America’s most legendary mountains.
