Creator's Key Takeaways

Even if you have no interest in learning about the types of fish in the river or in seeing a working hydroelect electric dam, this excursion is worth it just for these gorgeous views.

I've had a lot of practice on my various ACL cruises. And after a few hard landings, I'm pretty good at it now.

Creator's Tips & Advice

Use a travel agent to help coordinate flights to Lewiston because the airport is very small with few flight options.
Take the Bonneville Dam and fish hatchery excursion; it is highly recommended for the views and facilities.

YouTube Video Description

I'm back on American Cruise Lines' newest ship, the American Encore, for Day 3 and 4 of my Columbia River cruise! In this episode, I leave the eastern desert behind and cruise into the beautiful green hills of western Oregon and Washington. Watch as my ship navigates the locks at the John Day Dam under a massive, 876-ton "Guillotine Gate," followed by some high-wind drone maneuvers to capture the ship on the water and a nice landing on the shuffleboard court. The ship is docked in The Dalles, Oregon, and the passengers take a fantastic shore excursion to the Bonneville Dam fish hatchery and powerhouse—a must-do if you take this Columbia River cruise. Personal Update: By the time you see this, I will have just had prostate surgery. So, the next episode (Kalama & Mt. St. Helens) will be delayed a bit while I recover.
