This is the 7th video in our series about our cruise aboard the Diamond Princess! The one port stop of our cruise that took us outside of Japan was to Bussan, South Korea. For this port we opted to take a princess excursion to a Buddhist Temple and to a scenic plaza. This was one of our favorite excursions of our entire cruise. Our tour guide, Soo, provided us with a video that mapped our route in Bussan. So credit for the map goes to Soo! Our tour bus took our group from the port directly to the temple for our tea ceremony. When we arrived at Busan gwahng-myohng-sah. Gwangmyeongsa Temple, we were struck by the colorful beauty of its architecture. Our tour guide, Soo, and one of the leaders at the temple guided us in ringing the giant temple bell. After we entered the temple, our tour group participated in a Korean tea ceremony, with tea prepared from tea leaves in a traditional tea set, in keeping with the Seon meditation practiced in Buddhism. In Korean Zen (Seon) Buddhism and traditional tea ceremonies, "Daseonimi" is an expression that translates to "tea and meditation have the same flavor or result". It is frequently taught that drinking tea and practicing Seon (meditation) share the exact same ultimate purpose: calming the mind and searching for one's true self. This meditation constitutes the core of Korean Buddhist traditions. We certainly found the tea ceremony to be a moving experience. After the tea ceremony we had time to explore the rest of the ornate temple with many Buddhas and artwork which covered the walls and ceiling of the buildings. We then hopped back on the bus and headed to Yongdusan Park. YONG-doo-sahn Park is a large, hilly public space in the Nampo-dong area that features a large central plaza, a massive flower clock, the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, and a traditional Korean bell. This park includes a classic, pagoda-style tower that overlooks the old downtown and Busan port. The day we visited was South Korea’s Independence Day from Japan so We got into the spirit of the day before heading back to our ship.
