Tips for planning cruising to Alaska! Today we're going to talk about our top 5 Tips for Cruising Alaska.*Cruising to Alaska is an amazing experience. From wildlife viewing to walking on a glacier, there's really nothing quite like it.Here are a few tips to help you settle on the perfect Alaska cruise to suit YOUR travel preferences. Our first tip- choose the type of itinerary you prefer:Do you prefer a roundtrip voyage out of a port like Seattle or Vancouver OR a glacier and port intensive trip that starts in one city and ends in another? Or perhaps you prefer a land AND sea combination- Alaska cruise tours are very popular, and lines like Princess do an excellent job of combining a cruise with some pre or post cruise time on land... a great way to see places like Denali. Princess even offers their own lodges and rail service for seamless cruise to land travel. There are even smaller cruise lines specializing in casual, nature rich experiences in Alaska. Yet, they tend to be quite pricey. Our second tip: Consider early and late season cruising. If discounts are important to you, consider cruising in May or September to secure the best rates. You may also find some of the more popular ports to be less crowded during these months. We've also found that the weather in May can be great, and a little dryer than other months in Alaska. Tip 3: Get out on deck during glacier days.One of the highlights of cruising to Alaska is seeing glaciers up close and personal from the decks of a ship. We suggest you wake early and get out on deck (or your balcony if you have one) to experience the silence and magic that can only be experienced in the channels and waterways leading to the glaciers. This is a great time to bust out your binoculars for wildlife viewing and breathe in some of the freshest air you will ever experience. As you approach the glacier, you'll notice it becomes very chilly. But, Grab your gloves and hot cocoa and get out there. Tip 4: If you can, invest in a balcony cabin for your cruise to Alaska. So much of the scenery you can experience in Alaska can ONLY be seen on a cruise ship. It will cost more, but the photo opportunities are worth it. Also, remember that in Alaska, the sun goes down quite late during the summer months. You may find yourself on your balcony at 8:30pm snapping selfies in full daylight! And our last tip: Pack a map!we've found that it's great to post a map of Alaska on the wall of our stateroom while cruising. Did you know that many of the walls in your stateroom are magnetic? There are tons of cruise ship maps available online and often they are sold with Alaska cruise guidebooks, but your ship will probably offer one on board too. so pack a few magnets or pick them up in the on board gift shop and track your Alaskan journey! this is especially fun if you're traveling with kids.
