Creator's Key Takeaways

It is by virtue of its proportions the largest and by virtue of the history to which it is linked, the most important.

Spire Cathedral is historically, artistically, and architecturally one of the most significant examples of romanesque architecture in Europe.

What a beautiful city. What a beautiful way to walk back to the boat, except there was a swan in the way and it would not move, so you had to go around it.

I absolutely love Spire. Hope you all enjoyed it.

YouTube Video Description

Founded by the ancient Romans as a fortified town, Speyer is one of German's oldest cities, full of history. From our Viking River Cruise ship's berth, we walked by The Rhine River to the most important building in Speyer, the cathedral. The main sight in Speyer is Speyer Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, a significant example of Romanesque architecture and a powerful symbol of medieval imperial power. Founded in the 11th century by Emperor Conrad II, it served as a burial site for emperors, kings, and bishops. The cathedral's design, particularly its large vaulted basilica, influenced Romanesque architecture in the 11th and 12th centuries. According to the UNESCO website, "Speyer Cathedral, a basilica with four towers and two domes, was founded by Conrad II in 1030 and remodelled at the end of the 11th century. It is one of the most important Romanesque monuments from the time of the Holy Roman Empire. The cathedral was the burial place of the German emperors for almost 300 years." In the medieval old town, we walked by the Fishmarket, marked with a Flounder statue, the old Jesuit school, medieval houses and the oldest house in the region from 1290 and a protestant church. By the cathedral, there is the Mount of Olives statue, the big bowl in front of the cathedral that served wine to the people and the Bishop's house. Down the street from the cathedral, there is a Pilgrim Statue, shops, restaurants, city hall and a maypole celebrating ancient occupations. Speyer has a gorgeous old town full of history and sights. My sister and I attempted to visit the Sealife Aquarium but the doors were locked, so we walked back to the ship beside the Rhine River and walked around a swan that was claiming ownership of the walkway! #rhineriver #travel #germanytourism #europe #history #rivercruise #tourist #germany #speyer #speyergermany #speyercathedral #historicalplaces #historiccathedral #medieval #medievalhistory #holyromanempire Music from Bensound.com Chapters 00:00 Introduction 00:26 Speyer Cathedral 04:06 Medieval Old Town 05:04 Medieval and Oldest Houses 05:58 The Fishmarket 06:57 Protestant Church 07:38 Pilgrim Statue 08:12 Shops, Restaurants 09:44 Getting Ready to Leave Speyer
