Dubrovnik is one of the jewels of the Adriatic and is an incredibly popular destination for tourists and in particular cruise ships. So if you are heading there for just one day what can you expect to do Well Dubrovnik old town is the main attraction and it’s a 45-50 walk from the main cruise dock your cruise provider may lay on shuttle buses to the old town . However if not you can get a bud for only €2pp each way immediately outside the dock and these are busy but run frequently every 5-10 mins Taxis are easy to find too. An Uber costs €11.70 each way Dubrovnik has become a go tourist destination and this has been exacerbated by its use as a filming location for Game of Thrones Indeed you will find Game of Thrones shops and walking tours presented to you immediately upon arrival at the old town There are a number of fee paying and some free walking tours offered too. Most visitors enter the old town via the Pile gate which leads directly to the Main Street the Placa and the Onofrio fountain built i. 1438 Choices really start here with options to explore the old Franciscan monastery, go wondering the maze of narrow streets and alleyways or to start a tour of the old town wallls .. The wall walk is incredible and incredibly popular but does cost €35pp and will take you up to 2 hours of fairly arduous walking to complete the full circuit. At the other end of the placa is a favourite meeting place of locals the Orlando column In this plaza is the church of st Blair’s and the rectors palace which is the city museum Dubrovnik is filled with incredible churches and the main cathedral opposite Orlando columns gives you a taste of why it’s worth your time exploring these. Definitely worth a visit is the church of st ignatius which features incredible grottos and awe inspiring art on the walls and ceilings The option to explore dubrovniks winding and often steep stepped narrow streets is also a must do in our opinion This is how you can soak up and enjoy the amazing atmosphere with its plentiful restaurants and some incredible bars including the amazing Buza Bar located on rocks outside the old town walls and this is a place to enjoy a drink with a an incredible view across to lokrum island . On hot days and with calm sees this is also a place to Cool off with a dip and swim in the Adriatic… not when we visited however. Dubrovnik really is beautiful and filled with History culture and charm … but it’s also filled with tourists and is definitely a tourist trap. However this a place you can still enjoy and grow to Love despite the throngs of people and the elevated prices. We are glad we came and would recommend it.
