In fact, Napier and the wider region have over 70 wineries. Napier’s history goes back to the 1800s, starting as a small settlement of just a few hundred people. It grew steadily… until everything changed in 1931. The Hawke’s Bay Earthquake destroyed much of the city and reshaped the land. But from that devastation came something extraordinary: a complete rebuild in Art Deco, Spanish Mission, and Stripped Classical styles. That’s why Napier is now one of the world’s best-preserved Art Deco cities. The city kept growing through the mid-20th century, and today it’s a vibrant community of around 65,000 residents. Napier is also a great place to shop for jewellery — especially New Zealand greenstone, or pounamu. This beautiful, jade-like stone is incredibly strong and traditionally carved into Māori designs. Even though it comes from the South Island, many talented artisans in Napier create stunning pounamu pieces.
