Panama Canal Part 2: Dropping 85 Feet to the Caribbean!
YouTube Video Description↓
Welcome to Part 2 of our full transit through the Panama Canal aboard the Carnival Spirit! After rising 54 feet in Part 1, we continue our journey across Gatun Lake and begin the dramatic descent back to sea level through the final three locks. We start deep inside Gatun Lake, surrounded by lush green hills, calm water, and passing workboats. As we sail north, the channel narrows and the scenery shifts from tropical landscapes to industrial canal zones filled with tugboats, dredging equipment, and maintenance vessels. It’s a fascinating look at the working side of the canal. Next, we approach the Gatun Locks, where the ship begins its three‑stage drop toward the Atlantic. From our balcony, we watch the mules guide the ship into position, the massive steel gates close behind us, and the water level slowly fall. The tight clearances, dripping walls, and huge machinery make this one of the most impressive engineering moments of the entire transit. Lock by lock, the ship descends until the final gates open and we sail out into the Caribbean Sea, officially completing the Panama Canal crossing. The weather clears just in time, giving us a bright, beautiful view as we head toward our next destination. This has been one of the most incredible days of the entire cruise, and we’re so glad you came along for the ride.
