These rookie cruise mistakes can easily be overcome with some planning and foresight. From the start of the trip, you can ensure your cruise is smooth sailing by picking the correct cruise ship and cabin. Too often, travelers fail to select a cruise ship that matches their preferences. Ensure your ship has amenities you will use. Also, ensure that you opt for a cabin you will be comfortable in for the duration of the trip. When planning, don't make the rookie cruise mistake of not understanding what is covered in the cruise fare. On most contemporary cruise lines, only some onboard activities, dining, and entertainment are included and others could cost extra. Thus, you don't want to get sticker shock when some highly desired attractions are more expensive. Preparing for your cruise also means doing your online check-in ahead of time to get a preferable embarkation arrival appointment. You can stick to that appointment and don't arrive too early or too late. You don't want to wait outside for an hour, but you don't want to miss the ship either! Once onboard, don't try to skip the muster drill. Now, it is easier than ever to complete this mandatory safety briefing. Also, don't run straight to the buffet. Don't make the cruise mistake of thinking the buffet is the only place to eat. Often, several other complimentary dining options are available and are still all you can eat. Most likely, you are cruising to somewhere warm and tropical. So, pack sunscreen and use it! There is no excuse for getting sunburned on a Caribbean or Bahamas cruise. Pack at least SPF 30 (or higher) and apply it multiple times daily. You also need to ensure you put your cellphone in airplane mode so you don't rack up roaming charges while at sea. Even if you don't buy the internet, a cruise mistake to avoid is not signing on to the ship's intranet. You can use the cruise line's app without paying for a WiFi package. The app will list all of the daily activities, events, and hours of operation. Not knowing when events are taking place is a rookie cruise mistake you need to avoid! Finally, whatever you do, never forget about the crew. These hardworking staff members go above and beyond during your trip. Don't forget to recognize them during the voyage and when receiving the cruise line's survey! Despite what others say, we never recommend removing the mandatory gratuities. We even tip above and beyond this daily service charge.
