Only have limited time in Quito? I only had one day to explore the city, so I joined what was supposed to be a group tour. However, I was the only one that attended, so I ended up with a private tour. I was able to see vast areas of the city with 6 places standing out. I thought these places were the best things to see in Quito, especially if you only have 24 hours: 1. The Virgin of El Panecillo 2. Mercado Central 3. Plaza Grande 4. Metropolitan Cultural Center 5. Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus 6. San Francisco Plaza As a senior traveling solo, I chose to go on a guided tour for safety reasons. I had been warned numerous times that it wasn't safe for me to wander the streets on my own. I'm not sure if this was overstated, as I didn't feel unsafe while touring. However, ultimately, I was very happy with my decision. After spending the day with the tour guide, I felt I wouldn't have been able to accomplish as much on my own and I loved his commentary, which added so much flavor to what I was seeing. This tour was part of a 2 week trip to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos.
