YouTube Video Descriptionโ†“

Think of Edinburgh and likely you'll picture the Royal Mile and the castle and even Arthur's Seat. But Edinburgh has another coastal side which is Portobello Beach. It's only a couple of miles from the city center but this is also a great place to base yourselves and to stay and explore Edinburgh's sea and sand. This video shows the great things to do in and around Portobello - Edinburgh's trendy seaside suburb. It includes the beach itself as well as Portobello's Swim Centre which has some bargain original Victorian Turkish Baths. And food-wise you mustn't miss Oscar's Gelato (which has the best ice cream) as well as Miro's restaurant which serves delicious mussels as well as haggis fritters - if you want to give haggis a try, then this is an excellent place to try it. From Portobello you can cycle 10 miles down the coast to the tiny village of Cramond which also has a tidal island which you can walk out to at low tide - be careful not to get stuck there! Other must do's include visiting Craigmillar Castle, sometimes known as Edinburgh's 'other' castle, which is where Mary Queen of Scots used to stay. Bird lovers will want to head for the nearby Musselburgh Lagoons and boat/royalty lovers fans will want to make a beeline for the Royal Yacht Britannia which is moored in nearby Leith. They also have a royal cafe which serves the best ever scones and jam tea! Slightly further afield 15 miles away (but definitely worth going to for the day) is Aberlady. There's a fabulous nature reserve here (and more birds) as well as nature trails and giant sand dunes which back a remote, secluded beach which, on a good day, feels like the Caribbean. It WAS a good day while I was there! And not far from Aberlady is the Bonnie Badger, a top notch restaurant with rooms which serves fabulous food. Everything I ate was mouthwatering.
