The grand staircase was the center of activity on ocean liners. With the cruise industry this grew into the Centrum, a large central space that on Royal Caribbean ships often spans from deck 5 to the pool deck. The Empress of the Seas features a Centrum that starts on deck 5 with Guest Services and Shore Excursions desks as well as access to the Schooner Bar and Royal Theater. A main staircase connects to deck 6 where guests can access the balcony of the Royal Theater, the Promenade Deck, as well as the Royal Shops at Sea. Continuing up each deck has access to the passenger corridors with a seating area looking out to sea. The Very top level is deck 10 with access to the Windjammer Cafe and Pool Deck. In an effort to bring the older ships in the fleet up to the modern standards Royal Caribbean developed what they termed Centrum Wow. This new take on the Centrum introduces a dynamic LED lighting system that takes the venue to another level allowing it to operate as a full blown Entertainment venue rather than just an access space. With the return of the Empress of the Seas to the Royal Caribbean fleet she gained the same upgraded treatment.
