After a dramatically foggy and rain-soaked morning in Vancouver, the skies finally began to clear just in time for the graceful departures of Zaandam (Holland America Line), Coral Princess (Princess Cruises), and Explorer of the Seas (Royal Caribbean). This triple departure unfolds under dramatically improved weather conditions — the low-hanging clouds finally lifted just enough to reveal the forested lower slopes of the North Shore mountains, and the sun even made a brief cameo, casting golden light on the harbour. All three cruise ships departed on schedule, maneuvering smoothly through Burrard Inlet in stark contrast to the weather chaos earlier in the day. Coral Princess began her reverse move first, followed shortly by the stately Zaandam and the larger Explorer of the Seas. Despite the remaining haze and softened light, their distinct profiles stood out against the greys and greens of the harbour. Zaandam, a midsize classic ocean liner known for her elegant lines and musical theme, is continuing her Alaska season voyages, offering roundtrip cruises between Vancouver and the Inside Passage. Coral Princess, part of Princess Cruises’ fleet of smaller Panamax ships, is also operating Alaska-bound itineraries this summer, typically offering one-way routes between Vancouver and Whittier, Alaska — a favorite for glacier-viewing and immersive wilderness experiences.
