The cruise port of Longyearbyen is a cruise port like no other! Longyearbyen is the capital of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago and is the most northern town in the world. It's also home to polar bears and that's what really attracts visitors to this arctic wilderness. This video shows how best to spend a day and night here, which is a must if you are going on an expedition cruise from here - I went on an expedition cruise with Hurtigruten which circumnavigated this archipelago. During my stay here I went on a an amazing 7-hour hike called 'From Sea to Summit' during which I saw arctic foxes, whales and reindeer which are indigenous to Svalbard. I stayed at the Funken Lodge hotel - a lovely boutique hotel to the capital's north where the rooms and food are delicious. And I had the BIGGEST dinner ever - a 13-course tasting menu at a restaurant called Huset which was AMAZING. I thoroughly recommend doing all these things. And if you go in summer then you'll also experience the midnight sun like I did which is the weirdest phenomenon! Longyearbyen has a real outpost feel and is unlike any other cruise port you're likely to visit. It's definitely one for the bucket list. It is a 3-hour flight from Norway, on the way to the North Pole. If you don't like unbearable cold then be sure to visit here in summer!
