I visited the fabulous Nyuto Onsen from the cruise port of Akita in Japan. I was docked in Akita for a day during a cruise on Diamond Princess (Princess Cruises) and I travelled to this onsen independently in a taxi. This network of seven hot springs (called onsen in Japanese) is well known to the Japanese but not to tourists and I was the only person from my cruise ship to go here. And it was amazing to be there with just the locals. These hot springs are famed for their healing properties and in Japan you must bathe naked in onsen. I went to the onsen called Taenoyu (one of Nyuto's seven onsen) and I started in a private bath which I had pre-booked. Taenoyu has separate onsen for men and women as well as a mixed bath. I wanted to be brave and try the mixed unisex bath (yes, there were men in it and I had to be brave to go naked in it) but once submerged in the water nobody can see anything. The water was amazing and made my skin so silky and smooth and the view from the mixed bath was awesome - of a frothing, thundering waterfall. Before leaving Taenoyu I enjoyed lunch in its ryokan (a Japanese inn) - it was a delicious fish set with soup, fish and rice. The food was superb. I also had a look at another one of Nyuto's seven onsen - this one was called Tsurunoyu. It was very pretty with thatched roofs but I didn't have time to bathe in its water. Incidentally, the legendary Samurai warriors used to bathe in Nyuto back in the 16th century. Also nearby and definitely worth seeing is Lake Tazawa (the deepest lake in Japan). Be warned there's a lot of water in this video. There's the water of the hot springs, the waterfall, the lake and the RAIN. It was raining unseasonably hard while I was there!
