Mad things happen when you do an expedition cruise to either the arctic or Antarctic! One of those mad things is that you can challenge yourself to do what's called the 'Polar Plunge' - this involves a thorough dunking in the freezing arctic or Antarctic Ocean. For some crazy reason I give the polar plunge a go, somewhere close to the North Pole, during a Hurtigruten expedition cruise circumnavigating Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago. This video shows exactly what it's like, warts, freeze and all, and OMG is the water COLD! This video shows the struggle I have to even get IN the sea to plunge and the shivering shock when I get out. Watch on for some swimsuit fun - to laugh, praise or think I did a terrible job! Full disclosure - the reason I end up sitting down to submerge is because I gashed my toes on the rocks getting into the sea - it was a rocky beach - which made it harder to enter because my feet were in pain!
