Often referred to as the father of Uruguayan independence, Artigas is unchallenged as the greatest hero of the South American nation. His gaucho - cowboy - ways led him to seize the region Rio de la Plata out of Spanish control and command Uruguayan patriots in the war of independence. Artigas’ legacy still lives to this day. He is remembered as the architect that eventually led the country to freedom.
