The Jameos del Agua is one of the Canary Island of Lanzarote's main attractions. It's SO many different things. It's part of a 7km (4.5 miles) long lava tube/tunnel formed from a volcanic eruption on the island 30k years ago. Famed Spanish natural artist Cesar Manrique - who came from Lanzarote - gave a section of this volcanic tube the artistic treatment and that's what Jameos del Agua is. Walking through the tunnel and being inside it is both spooky and magical. By planting palm trees and creating lagoons within sections of the lava tunnel Manrique has turned this attraction into part geological phenomenon and part art. You'll have to watch the video to see what I mean. It's an astonishing place, like nothing I've ever seen before. In one of the tunnel's lagoons are these tiny, blind white crabs 1.5 inches long (known as the squat lobster or the blind albino cave crab) and this this is the ONLY PLACE IN THE WORLD you can see these crabs other than deep, deep on the ocean floor. And in another section of the tunnel Manrique has built an auditorium with the most amazing acoustics. The Jameos del Agua is why I love the Canary Islands so much - yes these islands have lots of sun and great beaches, but they have so much more too. As soon as cruises are up and running again, this would make a great excursion from port if your cruise ship stops in Lanzarote's capital Arrecife.
