While on a recent cruise on Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, had a stop in Civitavecchia. A port city (somewhat!) near Rome. Civitavecchia is roughly 51 Miles (82 Kilometers), and an hour and a half (or more!) drive each way! While in Rome, I took a small detour to Vatican City, a country all in itself! Vatican City, officially Vatican City State, is an independent city-state wholly enclaved within Rome, Italy. Established with the Lateran Treaty (1929), it is distinct from, yet under "full ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction" of the Holy See. With an area of 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of about 1,000, it is the smallest sovereign state in the world by both area and population. Vatican City, a city-state surrounded by Rome, Italy, is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. It's home to the Pope and a trove of iconic art and architecture. Its Vatican Museums house ancient Roman sculptures such as the famed “Laocoön and His Sons” as well as Renaissance frescoes in the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling. Enjoy!
