YouTube Video Description

This video is the 6th video in our series about our cruise around Japan aboard the Diamond Princess! Our Princess excursion to Shimonoseki also took us to Akiyoshido Cave. After we entered the cave, we walked down a long tunnel that was decorated with this mural that illustrates the history of the native people and animals that inhabited the area. Located in Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park , Akiyoshido Cave is the largest and longest limestone cave in Japan, with a width of 100 meters and a length of nearly nine kilometers.  It has a series of giant limestone caves and caverns that you can explore in tour groups. One kilometer of it is open to the public for exploring. We easily navigated the cave along well-lit, leveled wooden boardwalks and steps. Throughout the cave there are kiosks where you can press a button to hear an audio description about the myriad rock formations you see. Hyakumaizara (- Japanese for Hundred Plates): is Often considered the most iconic formation in the cave. Hyakumaizara ( consists of countless shallow, layered pools of lime-rich water that resemble terraced rice paddies. (Ōgon-bashira) which means the Golden Pillar is one of the most famous limestone formations in the Cave. It is a massive 15-meter-tall stalactite column that formed over thousands of years by lime deposits from water cascading down the rock wall. The Golden Pillar (Ōgon-bashira) is one of the most famous limestone formations in Japan's Akiyoshido Cave. It is a massive 15-meter-tall stalactite column formed over thousands of years by lime deposits from water cascading down the rock wall. Koganebashira or King Pillar): is A massive, 8-meter-high pillar that formed when a dripping stalactite and a growing stalagmite met. At a growth rate of 2 cm per 500 years, this structure is estimated to be well over 100,000 years old. Dounaifuji (The Cave Mount Fuji): A striking, cone-shaped stalagmite rising from the floor that mimics the shape of Mount Fuji, with its peak lost in the cavern's misty heights. Senjojiki & Kasazukushi: Massive chambers and ceilings covered in dense clusters of large, jagged stalactites look that look like a sprawling, overlapping sea of umbrellas. Near the 20-meter-high main entrance to the cave, sunlight filters in and reflects off the cave's still waters, casting a brilliant, pale blue glow onto the ceiling. This is called ah-oh-ten-joh or the Blue Ceiling. The eerily calm, deep blue underground pool that acts as a mirror, reflecting the cavern's soaring ceiling is called Jigoku-buchi (Hell's Abyss) There are a few shops at the end of the pathway that sell a random assortment of food and collectibles.
